How other campuses spend activities fee
by Carrie Eckmann

At every community college in the UH system, students pay an activity fee. This money funds student events, the college’s student senate and any student publications that college has.

Although most student senates and student activities boards are organized around a similar framework, each O‘ahu community college differs on where activity fees go and who controls what is done with the money.

The other larger O‘ahu community colleges all have a paid student activities advisor, who helps oversee and coordinate events.

Honolulu Community College has one of the lowest student activity fees: a full-time student pays $10 per semester. Most of this goes to student government, which then allots funds for various student events and to the clubs.
Kapi‘olani Community College has two different student-run organizations, the Board of Student Activities (BOSA) and the student congress.

The Board of Student Activities receives 85 percent of the revenue from the $20 student activity fee and coordinates most of the events happening at KCC. They have concerts with live bands almost weekly, which one student said are very popular.

KCC’s annual international fair is also paid for by student activities.

The student congress at KCC receives only 15 percent of the revenue from student activity fees. However, they also have access to another fund, the vending machine account, which is monitored by the provost.

Leeward Community College has had a lot happening this year. Events included a protect environment day, volunteer fair, multicultural day, keiki seat inspection, and opening day experience.

Funding for these events, clubs and new student lounge furniture came from their $10 student activity fee. LCC students are informed about happenings by fliers around the campus and via an e-mail bulletin.

According to a LCC student activities staff member, students seem to be happy with the senate activities because the current student senate is doing more than previous senates.
