CAMPUS NEWS WCC's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa welcomed its newest group of inductees last month and honored two others for their hard work and dedication to the organization. At the 2004 Pacific Regional Convention, WCC student Mikki O'Phelan was named "Distinguished Chapter Member" and associate professor Paul Field was chosen the region's "Distinguished Advisor." Phi Theta Kappa is the national honor society for two-year college students, and the Pacific region includes all the Hawai'i and Pacific island chapters. "It was a big surprise," said O'Phelan. "I feel so overwhelmed and honored." O'Phelan said membership in an organization like Phi Theta Kappa benefits students as well as the campus and community. "You learn a lot through the service projects and the value of networking," she explained. "It's a way to add to your resumes for scholarships and career opportunities while you're helping others. It's also a chance to gain life-long friendships." This past year's projects have included participation in the Windward Ho'olaule'a, the blood drives, a fishpond clean-up, a toy drive, Hawai'i Foodbank collection and a garage sale and "Relay for Life" for the American Cancer Society.
