The radio daze of spring comes to WCC
by Yama Lake
It’s high noon at the campus cafeteria patio.
“Okay my brother, let’s see it,” the Xtreme Radio 104.3 night shift deejay, Island Boy, tells a Windward student, kicking off the Town & Country (T&C) Surf-sponsored Spring Bling promotion March 10.
But see what? WCC students were asked to build paper airplanes and fly them through one of two partly rolled-down windows of a neon purple RAV4.
If a plane made it into the slimmer of the two openings, the student won a free pass to the event held at Pipeline Café March 24. A successful launch into the larger opening won a free T-shirt.
“My girlfriend and friends forced me to (come up here). It’s ironic. I don’t like the spotlight, but I’m a Leo,” said WCC student Shane Chambers, after winning a T-shirt.
With the help of WCC’s student senate, Xtreme Radio 104.3 and KCCN FM 100, set up vans on the patio walkway and bounced their speakers with music to win the attention of WCC students.
Students who did travel into Honolulu for the Spring Bling March 24 had the opportunity to win the free use of the RAV4 for one year.
“At the larger campuses there was more foot traffic, but not as much participation,” said radio station publicity officer Urusai, one of the main people responsible for executing the event.
The hullabaloo was also a chance for students to meet with members of WCC’s student senate, who was also giving away free T-shirts and fielding students’ questions. |
